About a week ago, I was reading an article online about how to know you grew up poor. I glanced at the items covered and there was one it failed to mention. Never throwing away odd socks.
I had no idea normal people did not keep the odd socks. Why?? you ask. if you are poor and get a package of socks, eventually one gets holey or lost. So you keep the odd socks to pair up later as the supply dwindles down. I know socks are out there and cheap, but I grew up berfore you had Walmarts and we were poor; you got socks and underwear at back to school and Christmas….thats it. Take care of what you have cause your wont get more till August or December.
Then I recall a friend of mine that did not grow up poor telling me she tossed odd socks every time she sorted laundry. I was like… OMG. but what if the mate shows up in the next round of wash. I had no idea people tossed odd socks. Many years later I was visiting with and old friend from school who grew up poor also. She too remembers the days of keeping the odd socks. Saldy, I am turning 60 in a month, I have a still have a stash of odd socks.
